It has to be tough to author a story with a completely original world, yet Karen Miller does an excellent job making the story work. The main character is portrayed as a curmudgeon with a strong sense of honesty and ethics. He often comes off as annoying, even if his heart is in the right place, but the author does a bang up job of explaining the reasons why his personal relationships work with those around him. The main character is slowly transformed in to the unlikely and unwilling hero of the series, steadily becoming more comfortable and accepting of the power that is thrust upon him. I feel that the book only really fails in the climax. Karen Miller does an excellent job of addressing all of the critical elements of a climax scene, and provides sufficient epilogue to wrap up any remaining questions and give a sense of "the story goes on from here, but that's another story all together" which I really appreciate, but it's all very unexpectedly abrupt.Tags : The Awakened Mage (Kingmaker, Kingbreaker) [Karen Miller] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. 1st edition 1st printing paperback, vg++ In stock shipped from our UK warehouse,Karen Miller,The Awakened Mage (Kingmaker, Kingbreaker),Orbit,1841496057,Fiction,Science Fiction,Fantasy
The Awakened Mage Kingmaker Kingbreaker Karen Miller 9781841496054 Books Reviews
This two-book series never gets anywhere. It is hundreds of pages of buildup, for a short and ill-described conflict at the end. Many reviews have been praising the character writing, but I think that is because it is all Ms. Miller focused on. That fact, however, doesn't necessarily make the characters any good. Their development and interactions in the first book were better. In this one, we see how and why Asher ends up hating everyone around him, then he is shoved into one place with all of the people he hates, just as he also finds out Prophecy's expectations of him. The result is a hundred pages of the characters waiting around while the world is ending, so we can be with Asher sorting out all of this at once. But most of it doesn't get sorted out anyway, so it gets a clunky resolution at the end.
I didn't mind the slow building of the first book, because I thought it would form the foundation for a truly epic second book. Oops.
This was so disappointing that I registered just to write a review about it.
It could have been so good the world is great, the stage is set well, and the characters are deep and interesting. Even the writing is great.
But nothing happens. Ever. I started to become suspicious after the first book, but I kept my faith. This should have been an epic, but it is 1.9 books of slowly proceeding plot followed by 0.1 book of action.
I don't know what more to say. Maybe these books could be retracted and the universe and characters re-cycled to better use?
I have the entire series and love it.
This is the second book I've read by Karen Miller (The Innocent Mage being the first), and I was very disappointed. The dialog was childish and tiresome; the end conflict lacked depth; and the solution too predictable. I doubt I'll be reading more my Ms. Miller.
It is challenging for me to find sci-fy books that I will stay up all night and read. The Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series is certainly one of those books! These books rivel the Harry Potter series with their dynamic storytelling and Miller's ability to create a new world which sucks the reader in! This sequel was a great end to the books - nail-biting to the end! I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys the fantastic and unusual.
Do you like getting emotionally attached to characters? Do you enjoy always being kept on the edge of your seat? How about emotional roller coaster rides? If so these two books are for you, because wow. Am I emotionally drained. Beautifully written all the way through, I'd say this author out did themselves. I cried, more than once. Both from happiness and sadness, and since that didn't ruin anything you can't call spoilers on me. Just be ready for A LOT of unwanted and unwarranted emotions.
Karen Miller has a knack for brilliant character dynamics. Even if you don't love them, you feel what they're going through without the struggles feeling contrived. They're believable, they react in believable ways and they feel as any of us might feel. The story picks up directly from where its predecessor left off, and barrels along like a steam engine nowhere near stopping. We learn more about the history of Barl, her wall, and how everything came to be. We learn more about the two peoples. All in all, this was a really fun read.
