There is an unexpected inheritance. When David and his sister are re-united, she is a mature and feisty woman determined to go her own way. She ends up in Paris, living an unconventional life. David tries to rescue her. In Paris, he has an affair with a young bohemian artist. This section of the novel is a "Storm and Stress" episode in which David thinks of suicide. A wide range of religious characters appear, from strict Evangelical, to liberal Anglican, to French Catholic.
