Different strokes for different folks, I guess is true. For I can't believe anyone wouldn't love this book. I have been reading historical romance for years. This book is was so good that I couldn't decide where to stop for the night. I wanted to just keep reading. The brother's did not sell their sister, their father did... sort of. They weren't happy about it but they would have lost everything. It was a bit cruel and I kept wishing one of them would tell her the truth. While it wasn't a good situation, things like that happen, especially in fiction. I think they hoped she'd fall in love with the Duke's son and live happily ever after. He was handsome and rich, so they didn't sell her to a beggar.The escape from France--- I won't tell you how or if they made it or not-- but it was very well done and the plot here was so clever, by far the best scenes in the book. I loved it. I'm off now to buy Liddy's brother's story. I hope it's as good as this one was. I love Ms. Landon's writing style. It's easy to read and I can truly escape the world and become involved in the story. It's very well written and the characters well defined. The book is fast-paced, no pages and pages of unnecessary information.

This was a tender self sacrificing story of Liddy and Gabe. The mutual love for Liddy's family kept them apart. Yet, it was their dedication to take the honorable course of action that made the story interesting and the H and h likable. The characters that were hard to like were Liddy's brothers and the demented controlling duke (who is meant to be the bad guy). I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a historical romance. I gave this book four out of five stars, because I had a hard time getting past the use of a trendy present day name. Otherwise it was a good fictional trip with a happy ending.
Loved It!
I enjoyed this story and the story line was easy to follow. The author drew the reader in and allowed us to feel the many emotions of her main characters. The story had intrigue, suspense, adventure, and romance. This is for anyone who enjoys a romance with difficulties, but the end of the story a happy ending. I have a vivid imagination so I was there as the hero suffered from the beginning to the end and felt their suffering dealing with their love.
Some romance stories put you through chapter after chapter of "needless" angst. You know you're going to get the "happily ever after" , but not until Scheherezade tells her thousand tales...geeze! Still, others have the two lovers meet, date and marry by page 20 - then give you chapter after chapter of needless angst.
"When Love is Enough" is perfect. There is plenty of worry for the reader to go through, with those few slivers of hope to grasp onto.
This was definitely a five-star read. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. But, sleep is overrated anyway!
I haven't read much of Laura Landon's work, but what I have read, I have enjoyed. This story has all the elements that I like. The characters are charming, the story is fast paced and literate. I already bought the 2d book in the series.
I think all three books I have read by Laura Landon are as good and better than most romance novels and since I usually can read most romance novels in a day or two, paying $.99 makes reading so much less painfull. This book in particular held my interest through out and was well done even if a little contrived and very similar in plot to Ms. Landon's other two books. I am thrilled to find an author that I like and one that I can read without breaking my bank. For all romance novel readers, this is a real find.
Lady Lydia Landwell thought she had an understanding with Gideon Talbot. She thought they had plans to marry and that they were both very much in love, but her father said she must marry the Duke of Chisolmwood's son. When she next saw Gideon, she told him he must speak to her father and explain that they were in love and that she could not marry another. Gideon merely said he could not marry her anymore, because the marriage contract with the Duke's son had already been signed by their fathers. Lydia said they must run away then. The love of her life then said he could not marry her under those circumstances, because that would forfeit her dowry and he had only planned to marry her for the money.
He walked away, immediately leaving for the Crimean War and Lydia was left devastatingly hurt and feeling betrayed. Then her father died. She had to reconcile this loss, too. A year passed and the pain was bearable, but then word came that her brother, Austin, was returning from Crimea with Gideon. Gideon was injured and not expected to live through the night. All the pain, anguish, love and hate camed churning back.
Fate in the form of danger and adventure kept throwing these star-crossed lovers together, making a very suspenseful and can't put it down read. War and intrigue took this couple from London to Paris and back to London in an ever spiraling nystery. Author Landon constantly brings fresh ideas to the romance genre. If you like edge of your seat drama and rocky paths to true love, this is a definite candidate. I loved this book.
I enjoy Laura Landon’s books and really get now I’m rereading books on my because there is little I have not read or not wanted to read in the u limited library. I guess the first time I read this book nothing bothered me, but this time I noticed a huge problem! The war was the Crimean War. France and the United Kingdom were Allies in that War and were on amicable terms at the conclusion of the war. Why were there French soldiers guarding the ports, why did they have to sneak in n and out? Now I can’t finish because it makes no sense. Why would Austin be spying on France? Why would France have full prisons? This is not historically accurate.
