Tell me what is creepier than stumbling upon a hand-dug bunker full of skulls? Nothing that I can think of right at the moment. And not just skulls laying around haphazard, skulls that are cleaned, polished and place systematically in carved alcoves. A collection, a personal catacomb. That's nightmare material right there, and that is this novella kicks off. Placing this unsettling image into your cerebrum, staking its claim on your nerves. And THEN, it starts to slowly apply pressure.I had a great time reading this piece from Tim Marquitz, a rare horror entry from a writer more commonly found in the realm dark and urban fantasy. He has no problem bringing the discomfort here. From the skulls them selves, to the chilling visions Jacob experiences and subsequent shroud of obsession that descends over him, it's all delivered with a healthy dose of tension.
The relationship between Jacob, his father and step-mother felt realistic and honest, with Jacob as more of an indentured servant than son. If adds dimension to the character, a good kid shoehorned by his parents social status. Strengthened by genuine interaction his his group of friends. These characters come off the page like real people, saying things real people say, reacting in a realistic manner. It makes the book easy to fall into and tough to expel from your brainpan when the curtain falls.
Skulls is a satisfying read to the end and I have no problem in recommending it to others.

More of a long novella than a novel, but Tim manages get get a lot of horror into relatively few pages in this imaginative and completely original story. Jacob Rile is basically a good kid, so what if his Father is an abusive drunk and his Stepmother couldn't give a damn. He has his friends and a girl who seems to care a lot for him. When Jacob discovers a mystery on the property of old man Jenks he starts to lose it all. I'm not a squeemish person, I love Horror and read it more than any other genre, but I actually squirmed in my chair as I read portions of this book.
Totally recommended.
Skulls is a fun, short read that does a good job of capturing several narrative threads in a brief space. There is first the familiar-feeling environment of Ruidoso, New Mexico. This combines seamlessly with the metal/trailer upbringing of the protagonist to give the reader an glimpse of what Stephen King might have written had he grown up listening to Megadeth. The magic sits in plain daylight and delivers in the short space of a hundred and change pages. Read this book if you enjoy the genre.
I've read a few of Tim's books, but this one really took me by surprise. I'll admit, I bought it simply because it was out of print and I knew I'd want it for his shelf in my library. I planned to read it eventually. Over the weekend, I felt it calling to me and I quickly became lost in it.
The description in this book is astounding. Tim uses minimal words and crafts them to create an experience. You don't even have to close your eyes to be 'there' in the story. I could actually taste the nasty, microwaved steak in my mouth. I'm seriously blown away. I don't remember the last time I read such vividness.
I've come to know Tim as a gore master. In this book, there's some of it, but it's not as rampant in some of his other works. I feel like he kept it on a leash in order to add more terror than blood. He completely succeeds. This is a terrifying story.
We're faced with a bit of a mystery. We know there's a serial killer and that the skulls belong to him/her. We don't know who the serial killer is. Now, I was able to figure it out pretty quickly. Thankfully, there was enough misdirection that most of the book was spent questioning myself. I thought I knew who it was, but it was just a hunch. I could easily have been wrong. Normally, when I can figure out the mystery, it's a rough point with me. In this case, I'm not even mad. I had so much fun waiting to find out that I was right!
I only have one minor complaint. I despised the addition of the last chapter. Now, I realize that not everyone reads like I do. People have different tastes and require different endings. I do see the necessity for it. I just hated it. So, consider yourself warned. If you get to the end of chapter twenty-five and you feel sated, stop. Don't read the last chapter. If, however, you need things wrapped in a neat little bow, continue reading.
